While the media has been speculating what it means for the United States House of Representatives to implement an impeachment inquiry, many people don’t understand what an impeachment inquiry means. To be honest, we know that people aren’t out celebrating in the streets over it, which is a good thing honestly. Now that Democrats are seeing support over the impeachment inquiry, Democrats needs to do a better job explaining what this process means.
If you judge by President Donald Trump’s Twitter account, they are waiting to storm the White House right now. After his retweet of a ringing endorsement of a possible second Civil War if they storm the Oval Office Seal Team Six style.
Now, it is pretty certain that Trump knows that isn’t going to happen, but his base doesn’t. He is gearing them up to have them take to the streets and fight for him. Many in the Democratic Party are attempting to downplay the act as an actual inquiry, which is a good thing. However, some are playing this as the final song from the band on the Titanic. If you watched Bill Maher’s opening monologue on Real Time with Bill Maher, he calmed down some of the people’s expectation when he began talking about the inquiry.
It is important to note that all this does is allow the House of Representatives the ability to actually look into President Trump’s actions. It’s similar to an episode of Law & Order. The first half of the episode focuses on the cops investigating the crime and making an arrest. That is all the house committees, six of them, investigate and gather all the evidence they can. Once all the six committees do that, then it goes to the District Attorney (the full House). The full evidence is presented and they vote to see if there was any crimes that reached the whole “”Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.”
While some in the media are claiming that this is a fictitious argument made against the president, it really isn’t. It comes from Article II, Section 4 of the United States Constitution. Yet, there is no guarantee that it will be able to do what two other impeachment trials was able to do – convict and remove a sitting president.
The strategy for Democrats (worrying about the 2020 election) is to take the wind out of President Trump’s sails. Use the Republican talking point of “we want to see the evidence”. Democrats need not gloat about doing this. Play the “with a saddened heart” we need to look into the possibility that President Trump abused his power for personal gain. Remind people that is the goal of the inquiry. Not about the Russian collusion.
As we begin to move into Trump’s fall of discontent, it is important to note that all of Trump’s point men may bring him down without the Democrats even looking for anything. Rudy Giuliani is getting himself deeper and deeper into murky waters every time he speaks. Let’s be honest, if he is your personal attorney, who needs an impeachment inquiry.
