Edge Chromium Browser Full Release in January

Microsoft has announced that it is planning to release their new Edge Chromium browser in 2020. The browser has been in beta since it was announced earlier this year. Currently, it is in a “release candidate” state, which is available for Windows 10, Windows 7, Windows 8, and macOS. Let’s be honest, this is something Microsoft should’ve done a long time ago.

Microsoft is targeting release of the new Edge Chromium browser for January 15, 2020. The current candidate build supports sync support for passwords, history, favorites, and settings across Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. It also includes Microsoft’s new built-in tracking protection, which is enabled by default.

Microsoft is really targeting this January 15th Edge release date at businesses and corporate customers. “Today marks an important milestone as we head to the formal launch of Microsoft Edge and Bing for our commercial customers in January,” explains Yusuf Mehdi, head of Microsoft’s modern life, search and devices Group. “As we enter the new year, we are excited to share more about how we will expand opportunities for developers, and later in the Spring even more for consumers.”

Microsoft is also bringing some new business-focused features to Edge. You’ll be able to type in the address bar to find co-workers, office locations, floor plans for a building, and even get definitions for company acronyms. It’s all part of Microsoft Search in Bing, which is built into Edge. It’s designed to combine typical intranet searches into an interface where you can also search the web using Bing.

New logo. Finally got rid of that ridiculous “E”.

Having been using the new Edge Chromium browser since its beta was launched, it is essentially Chrome. If you can use Google Chrome, you can use Edge. Many times, you can forget that you’re not using Chrome until you look for a search. Edge does allow you to select another search engine or non-Bing search engine, but it is confined to either your home page or new tab. Not both.

If you listened to any of our old podcasts, you will have heard us talk about using it and it was surprisingly good. Their original Edge browser, which was designed to replace Internet Explorer, didn’t meet the requirements that people needed. However, the new Edge Chromium browser allows you the ease of using Chrome, but without all the bloatware that comes with it.
