PayPal Won’t Support Pornhub for Performers Pay

You have to admire the hustle some people have. You have something people want, you need to get paid for it. Now, for the performers on Pornhub, things just a bit more difficult. On Wednesday, PayPal won’t support Pornhub payments to their performers (via Vice).

In a blog post, Pornhub said that it was “devastated” by the decision, which cuts off the primary way it pays “over a hundred thousand performers.” PayPal explained their rather sudden decision to Vice, PayPal said it discovered that “Pornhub has made certain business payments through PayPal without seeking our permission. We have taken action to stop these transactions from occurring.”

PayPal told Gizmodo that these “business payments” apply to payments to performers. And PayPal’s acceptable use policy also forbids “certain sexually oriented materials or services,” which, as Vice points out, is murky enough phrasing to give PayPal leeway to make decisions like this.

Now, Pornhub performers are not shit outta luck. They do have other payment options including check, direct deposit, the Paxum e-wallet, and the Verge cryptocurrency (no relation to The Verge tech blog, but it would be hilarious if it was). Pornhub tells us that it will “continue to add more sex worker-friendly” ways to get paid and that it’s exploring more crypto options as well.

Now that PayPal won’t support Pornhub, it leaves room for speculation in regards as to how PayPal just discovered this issue. It has been supported for a while, but the change comes out of nowhere, even for the company. This could hurt some performers as setting up direct deposit because some banks refuse to serve sex workers.

It will be interesting to see if that sort of change will affect people who perform on the site. Since PayPal won’t support Pornhub, many people should decide not to support PayPal. I mean, porn is a huge business and they should recognize it. Just sayin’.
