On a very quiet Tuesday morning, Marvel released the Black Widow teaser. Having stumbled upon it while browsing Twitter, I managed to see it eight minutes after it was released. I know that sounds kind of sad, but the trailer was definitely setting things up to be a huge action story, featuring everyone’s favorite assassin turn SHIELD agent, Natasha Romanoff.
After her demise in Avengers: Endgame, we get a story about Natasha reuniting with her family to confront her past. Taking place after the event of Captain America: Civil War, we will get some backstory about what she was doing during that time before Avengers: Infinity War.
Directed by Cate Shortland (Lore) from a script by Jac Schaeffer (Captain Marvel) and Ned Benson (The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby), the long-anticipated action thriller as Natasha heads off to confront her past. That includes the Red Room, the Soviet brainwashing and training facility seen in an illusion in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and the “blood in her ledger” from her days as an assassin.
The Black Widow teaser brings those threads together, not only in the montage from previous films, but in the introduction of Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova and Rachel Weisz as Melina, other members of the Black Widow Program, and David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov, aka Red Guardian — in a too-small costume, no less! — the Russian counterpart to Captain America. We’re also treated to a glimpse of classic Marvel villain Taskmaster in action.
The film is expected to open May 1, 2020. This will be the first Marvel movie since Spider-Man: Far From Home, which opened back in July. The Black Widow teaser gives us something to look forward too, as well as some emotional punches that will culminate in her decision to give her life for all the people everyone else lost. Sometimes it benefits from staying up on a school night.
